the writing on the wall

It's no secret that I like words. I like the art of them, I like the look of them, I like the sound of them. Words hold power, meaning, and now they hold visual appeal too. I've been dabbling in the world of modern calligraphy for about a year now and I'm really thoroughly enjoying it.

I was always inspired by my friend Beth in college and her ability to just create something to hang on her wall. She has some serious skills - painting, drawing, calligraphy, all of it, and I always envied her so deeply. So when I tried my hand at this and realized it wasn't half-bad, I wanted to get something, anything, up on my walls as soon as I could!

Now of course - it's far from perfect. There's a reason I teach during the day and blog at night, instead of running a calligraphy business. While it's not perfect, and I'm still trying to get better at it, I simply love seeing my own work on the wall. No to mention the text itself holds so much meaning for me. Truly, I realize they're not perfect and are certainly a far cry from anything on the professional level, but I'm finding a lot of joy in the process. I'm still hunting for my specific style and it's an enjoyable journey. The flaws I see in the product are what excite me to try it again, to keep fine-tuning and going back to the drawing board.

Keeping it simple with pasted up papers or a basic pop-in frame also lets me swap it out whenever I want! The flexibility in itself is very appealing and accommodating to changing with the seasons.

Do you have any of your own work hanging on your walls?
